When you’re just about fed up with the cold of winter and desperately want to be in warmer weather and spirits, it’s time to knock out some spring cleaning so when the weather permits, you can enjoy more time outdoors.

You may be asking, “What in the world is “Green Cleaning” and why should I even bother?”

Green cleaning refers to “using cleaning methods and products with environmentally friendly ingredients and procedures which are designed to preserve human health and environmental quality.” However, we can’t talk about green cleaning without addressing the risks involved with using these product’s “not so green” counter parts.Traditional Cleaning Products…we spread this stuff on EVERYTHING!! From the sink to the toilet, to the carpet and even the air we breathe. As a modern society, we just can’t get enough. We LOVE the smell of Febreeze on our clothes and furniture, and we are utterly impressed if we show up to a friend’s house and their sparkling house smells like fresh bleach and Pinesol. We might even go so far as to assume this said friend has their act together- Ha! Really who does?! BUT, what if those chemicals are making you sick, hurting the environment, and even filling the pockets of irresponsible companies at the risk of your health and the health of your loved ones? If you’ve had the opportunity to watch documentaries like “Stink!”, you might even be alarmed to discover how some products on American shelves are down right not safe, by design. That might be another blog post in itself so let’s start with the WHY and HOW you can do something about it. We will end with some practical tips on how to get started with alternative cleaning methods.

“P-Chloro-o-benzy-what-what?? WHAT ARE ALL THESE INGREDIENTS?!”

Traditional cleaning products are packed full of many chemicals that come with warnings such as:

  • Keep out of reach of children
  • If ingested, contact Poison Control
  • Do not mix cleaning agents, particularly acids and bleaches.  These mixtures discharge toxic gases and may be dangerous in the case of inhalation.

(Oh my!)

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to identify how dangerous these chemicals are. The fact that we are exposing ourselves as well as our children and pets to these toxins deserves some thoughtful consideration.

Protect Your Health

Ever spend your morning scrubbing and cleaning the bathroom only to spend the afternoon in bed with symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, dizziness, and a headache? Well, unless you are allergic to cleaning (you would BE so lucky!) That’s because the ingredients in traditional cleaning products are known to be carcinogens, neurotoxins, and even endocrine (hormone) disruptors. Any system in the body controlled by hormones can be derailed by endocrine disruptors. Some studies have even linked the use of chemical cleaners to be as bad for your health as smoking 20 cigarettes a day!

 Three words…NOT WORTH IT!

However, this post is not meant to shame the lovers of Lysol or worse, discourage that Spring Cleaning that we all need to tackle. So now that we’ve covered reasons why we shouldn’t use toxic chemical cleanerslet’s talk about the reasons why we should use green cleaning products; and the benefits for making the switch.

 SAVE TIME, MONEY, AND MORE!

We can spend hundreds of our hard earned dollars on a different cleaner for just about every type of dirt in our home. Toilet cleaner, bleach wipes, glass cleaner, mildew remover, floor cleaner and the list goes on and on. But is it all really necessary? Tossing all those cleaners for one non-toxic, biodegradable formula cleaner that can be used on multiple surfaces can save you in many ways. Saving your storage SPACE  by replacing 10 bottles and wipes with just one refillable squirt bottle and reusable cloths. Saving you MONEY by not having to buy and replace all those cleaners. Saving the PLANET by reducing the amount of waste generated by using so many products. Lastly, saving your precious TIME  with keeping it simple and cheap with one rock solid, all- purpose cleaner. (Who’s got their act together now?!)

 HEALTHY, HAPPY HOME

When you integrate non-toxic cleaners into your cleaning routine you spare yourself the “side-effects” of chemical cleaners and get to enjoy the “side-benefits” of non-toxic cleaning. Add some lavender to your all-purpose cleaner and before you know it, the aromatherapy affects of lavender make that daunting weekend cleaning just a bit less stressful. You even notice the kids have taken the crazy down a notch and the house smells like a day spa. Not a bad visual, right? We can all benefit from feeling better while doing the chores that are a necessary evil. Keeping our home healthy can impact our personal health, and we all know that healthy people have more energy. More energy to  RUN A MARATHON!! Just kidding, in this “down to earth” context, more energy to CLEAN YOUR HOUSE.

 HOW TO GET STARTED

This post is not an intervention. It is not a call to go home and throw away all of your cleaning products like a crazed exorcism. You’ve spent good money on those products and you should feel confident using them as you chose to get the jobs done you need to take care of. You might (considering your new found awareness) decide to use gloves and even a hankerchief over your nose and mouth while using these products. And when you’re finished with the container, make sure to recycle what you can to reduce waste. Some might be surprised to discover what their local recycling center takes. In Cortez, Colorado city limits we can recycle type 1 and 2 plastics (spray bottles, liquid detergent bottles) , aluminum (spray cans) corrugated cardboard (carpet refresher container) and paper products like paper towels. Once you’ve used up one product, that’s a great opportunity to either buy a non-toxic, biodegradable formula cleaner or even make your own cleaner. Even reusing old wash rags or shredding old t-shirts and socks to use for cloths can get you moving in the right direction with little to no cost.
