Whether it’s catching a nasty virus at the gym or the kids bringing home germs from school, having a strong Immune System is nature’s best defense for improving quality of life.

What exactly is our body’s Immune System, how does it work and what can we do to improve it?

The immune system is your body’s defence against infection and illness. It recognizes the cells that make up your body, and will try to get rid of anything unfamiliar. It destroys germs (bacteria and viruses) and parasites.

How do we know if we have a strong or weak immune system?

Contrary to popular belief, not getting sick often isn’t a guaranteed sign of a healthy immune system. Naturally we are all exposed to different qualities and quantities of bacteria and viruses dependent on variables such as our occupation, geography and lifestyle.  It’s not the difference between if we get sick but rather, how effectively our bodies fight back. Of course we all would rather not get sick but let’s keep in mind that our immunity is strengthened every time we recover quickly from the crud  that’s “going around.”  It makes more antibodies specific to that infection and our natural defenses gets more specific and more effective.  With a healthy immune system we should be able to fight off an infection in less than a week and we can get sick as frequently as once a season. There are also Blood tests available to diagnose an immune disorder. Blood tests can determine if you have normal levels of infection-fighting proteins (immunoglobulin) in your blood and measure the levels of blood cells and immune system cells. Abnormal numbers of certain cells can indicate an immune system defect.

When it comes to how to treat an illness, this is where we find the disconnect between over the counter cold medicines, prescription antibiotics and natural homeopathic medicine. Not to mention the encouragement of little to no assist in recovery and just letting the body do it’s job. Every time we suppress or interfere with our natural defense system, we lower our immune system’s ability to become stronger. These “super bugs” we hear about isn’t just something that sounds like it came out of a Marvel comic, it’s a real public health concern and suppressed immune systems are at the root of the cause.

Why is having a strong immune system seem to be such a challenge?

In this day and age, when we feel sick– it’s easy to feel like we have to get better, and quick. Like, no less than a couple hours-quick (because we would rather save sick days for something more worth it like a Netflix and chill “sick day”). We are so busy and live such a fast pace- high stress lifestyle. We don’t even realize how that level of stress on the body takes so much energy and heaven forbid we are bothered with being forced to rest and recover. (Ain’t nobody got time for that!) We burn our preverbal candles from both ends and when we get sick we junk up our bodies with strong cold medicine and antibiotics  so we don’t have to feel the discomfort.  We feel like our work loads don’t allow for any unexpected downtime; we simply don’t have time to get sick and we definitely don’t have time to rest and recover if we do get sick.

What things can we do to improve our immune response?

We may not have the ability to control what germs we are exposed to but there are a few practical ways we can protect ourselves. Things like not smoking, drinking alcohol only in moderation, exercise, keep a healthy bodyweight and nourish your body with lots of high quality fruits, vegetables, vitamins and supplements have proven to help keep us in optimal health. Let’s also not forget to mention keeping our stress levels to a minimum in every day life. Easier said than done but taking time for your grounding “WOOSAHHHH” moments is super important considering the stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system.
